I had the hardest time choosing my “A Lovely Year of Finishes” Goal for May and then I realized that it only made sense to choose the one that I already had everything I needed to finish. So even though this isn’t my oldest UFO/WIP, I’m going to be working on my One Big Cabin quilt that I completed the top for last fall.
The backing fabric isn’t quite wide enough so I’ll need to piece that. I hope to have that accomplished and be ready to start hand-basting this weekend.
When I was quilting my little Christmas Mouse wallhanging I really liked the way the hand quilting with perle cotton made the plum pudding and calendar stand out, so I’ll be hand-quilting around the squirrel, owl and racoon as well as adding some embroidered details to them.
I haven’t quite decided how to quilt the log cabin style blocks or the bottom border. But in the cream colored blocks, I will be free motion quilting leaves like the ones I practiced on my Sampler Table Runner.
The binding strips are sewn together so once the quilting is done, I’ll be ready to trim and bind it.
Finishing this by the end of the month is going to be a challenge because I have several other projects including some tutorials that I also want to get finished this month so I can share them here on the blog. Not to mention, we’ll be planting our garden as well. May is going to be a very busy month!

May 8, 2015 11:04 pmWhat a cute quilt that is. Your quilting, whatever you do, will really enhance it, and someone is going to love it. Do you have that someone in mind yet?

May 7, 2015 1:04 pmYour little raccoon is much nicer than the ones that our son has discovered living under his house. His are quite feisty and it’s now a concern with our little grandson wanting to play in the back yard. We’d definitely rather have your version!!

May 7, 2015 11:56 amHello Paula,
I replied by e-mail but I thought I’d replied here too in case anyone else would like to know. The pattern came with a kit I bought last year when we were on our way to Nebraska for a work contract for my husband. We stopped off at Heritage Designs Quilting and Needlework shop at Amana Colonies in Iowa.
The pattern itself is called One Big Cabin by Row House Creations. http://rowhousecreations.com/2012/04/11/one-big-cabin-is-here/
They also have an etsy shop where you can buy a digital version. https://www.etsy.com/listing/175198644/one-big-cabin-baby-quilt-pattern-with?ref=listing-shop-header-4
It was a super fun quilt top to put together.
