Prudence Angel Embroidery Pattern

I had such fun drawing and designing this month’s embroidery pattern for you. 

Allow me to introduce Prudence.

If you ask her though, she’ll tell you she prefers to be called Pru!

And there’s a good reason for that. She is without a doubt the most misnamed angel if ever there was one. Or at least, that’s what you’ll hear the other angels say.

She runs down heaven’s hallways when she’s supposed to be floating or gliding gracefully.

She’s forever being told to sit quietly on her cloud and play her harp until she’s called to choir practice.

But there are just too many interesting things to explore up in heaven, not to mention all the exciting goings on down on Earth.

Not that she’d ever, ever go there… well maybe just once or twice. But she had really good reasons, no matter what Archangel Gabriel thought when he’d taken her by the wings and towed her back to heaven.

The first time, she lost her wings for a month. She lost them for a whole year the second time. Even in heaven, a year is a loooonnnnggg time for little angels. It was just too unfair!

Prudence Angel Embroidery Pattern

Materials needed:

• Small square of light colored fabric 6.5″ X 6.5″
• Embroidery Floss
• Embroidery hoop
• Embroidery needle

Use some kind of light source to trace Prudence onto a fabric of your choice.

For years, I just taped the pattern and fabric to a window. But that can be really hard on the arms and it doesn’t work if you’re wanting to get started when it’s dark outside.

Now I use a Huion lightbox to trace all my patterns. You can adjust the brightness of the light to just the right level and if you turn it off and start again later, it remembers what brightness you were using. I love that feature.

And it’s just so much more comfortable to sit down to trace. I highly recommend buying a light box if it’s at all within your budget.

Everyone has different preferences for what they use to trace patterns with. To trace Prudence, I used a blue fine tipped Clover water soluble marker.

As you can see, the tracing is faint but still enough to stitch by. A spritz of water after stitching and the ink disappears.

Prudence can be embroidered in any colors you choose but if you’d like to use the same ones I did, I’ve listed them below.

Two strands of floss were used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Her wings are stem stitched with DMC S5200 (formerly 35200) Snow White Rayon/Satin Floss.

I was so pleased when our oldest daughter mentioned that she looks like she’s glowing because that’s what I intended when I chose that particular floss.

Her halo and the star she’s holding are backstitched using DMC 5283 Light Effects Precious Metals Silver. It comes in a twisted double strand. I divided it and used a single strand. 

I’ll admit that the Light Effect floss can be a bit of a pain to work with but the halo and star needed something shiny.

Quick tip: When using any kind of specialty floss, make sure to do a small sample stitching on a separate piece of fabric. Then do a heat test with your iron. I’ve had specialty flosses melt when pressed with the iron set on the cotton setting. It’s always better to test first and change flosses than get a piece completely finished and have all that work ruined because a specialty floss melts!

My tests on the Silver Light Effects and the Satin floss turned out fine, but I’d still suggest you make your own tests just to be safe.

Prudence’s hair is backstitched using a single strand of DMC 433 Medium Brown. 

Again a single strand is used for her mouth, the outline of her face, neck and hands… this time using a whipped backstitch in DMC 422 Light Hazelnut Brown. Her cute little nose is satin stitched with a single strand of that same DMC 422.

Two tiny straight stitches of DMC 844 Ultra Dark Beaver Grey make up her eyes. (I had tried using black but it looked too stark on her little face.)

The eyes of the star are single straight stitches in the DMC 844. The star’s mouth is backstitched in the same color.

The body of  her dress is backstitched using DMC 826 Medium Blue while the collar and band at the bottom are DMC 827 Very Light Blue.

Her shoes are backstitched with DMC 803 Ultra Very Dark Baby Blue.

Once embroidered she could be turned into a small gift tag, used as a panel on a gift bag, a block in a quilt or anywhere you need a little Christmas angel. 

She’s finishes at about 2¼” X 3½”. So she’d also be super cute as a small stuffed ornament.

For mine, I added 1.5″ inch strips of fabric all the way around, fused batting to the wrong side, fused interfacing to lining fabric cut to size, sewed those right sides together leaving an opening for turning. Then I turned it right sides out and stitched the opening closed using a ladder stitch (aka invisible stitch.)

The finished piece was topstitched down one side, across the bottom and up the other side to the front of a Christmas Stocking to form a pocket.

I love how my Prudence Angel stocking turned out!

Here’s the stocking displayed on one of our window shutters.

I even dug out some of the pine Christmas garland and wrapped it around the stair railing so you could see how sweet the Prudence Angel stocking would look hung up at Christmas time.

A funny thing happened when I finished drawing Prudence.

As you may have gathered from my description of her above, she came to life in my mind. I’ve already drawn two more pictures of her with even more in the planning stages.

You see, I started out many years ago writing children’s stories. It was my first passion and little Prudence has rekindled that. I have the very beginnings of what I’m hoping will turn into a much longer story, perhaps even a series of stories featuring her.
