Pumpkin Gnome Home Mini Quilt Pattern

Welcome everyone to my day of the Pick a Pumpkin Blog Hop. As soon as I heard about the hop being organized by Carla over at Creatin in the Sticks, I knew exactly what I wanted to make. So I signed right up.

Then as often happens, inspiration struck when I was working on the applique pumpkin that I’d originally planned to make… why not turn it into a Pumpkin Gnome Home Mini Quilt!

I began by enlarging September’s Pumpkin Embroidery pattern.

A door and windows were added and then because winter will be here all too soon, it had to have snow on the roof and a wreath on the door.

Pumpkin Gnome Home Mini Quilt

Materials needed to make one Pumpkin Gnome Home mini quilt:

• 13″X13″ square of background fabric
• Scraps for the applique
• HeatNBond Lite Iron-On Adhesive (If you want to be able to skip blanket stitching the finished applique, you can use HeatNBond UltraHold Iron-On Adhesive.)
• Embroidery floss
• 15″X15″ square of batting
• 15″X15″ square of backing fabric
• Two 2¼” strips of fabric cut WOF (width of fabric)

Print off the pattern (scroll down to bottom of the instructions for the link to download the pattern.)

Please note: The applique pieces have already been reversed for you.

Trace all the pieces of the applique onto the paper side of the HeatNBond Iron-On Adhesive.

Cut them out just outside of the cutting line. Fuse the pieces to the wrong side of the fabric and cut out along the cutting lines.

Place the pattern on your pressing surface and cover with parchment paper. You will be using the pattern as a guide for positioning the applique pieces.

Lay out the pieces of the pumpkin to test to see if you like how they look.

I decided I wasn’t happy with the orange with the Xs so I switched those two pieces out for a different fabric.

Once you’re happy with how your pumpkin looks, remove the paper backing and apply them to the parchment paper in the order in which they are numbered.

Your fused pumpkin should look something like this.

Allow it to cool completely before carefully peeling the fused pumpkin off the parchment paper.

Center the pumpkin from side to side on the background fabric with the bottom of the pumpkin about 2½” from the bottom of the block.

Before fusing the pumpkin down, position the snow on top as shown on the pattern. If the pumpkin shows through the snow, you may want to fuse two snow pieces together and then fuse that piece to the pumpkin.

Fuse just the top half of the pumpkin to the background fabric, leaving the bottom half free for now.

Again using the pattern as a guide under a piece of parchment paper, make the door and the windows.

I found it easiest to lay out the door and window frames and sills first, then carefully lift those off the parchment and set them aside.

Add the wreath and doorknob to the door. Place door frame and step in place and fuse.

Add the curtains to the windows. Fuse the window frames in place.

Peel the finished door and windows off the parchment paper.

Position them on the applique pumpkin as indicated on the pattern. Fuse in place, leaving the bottom of the step unfused.

Fuse the snow to the bottom of the block, beginning with the shoveled path. Then add the snow on either side.

Finally, fuse the step in place.

This part of your Pumpkin Gnome Home mini quilt is complete.

Can’t you just picture the gnomes all cozy and warm inside?

In fact, it’s picture storybook perfect!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the home,

Not a creature was stirring, not even a gnome…

Blanket stitch around the applique pieces to secure them permanently in place.

Add any embroidery embellishment you might like.

I plan to add a bow to the wreath and a curl of smoke coming out the stem of the pumpkin to turn it into a chimney. 🙂

Sandwich the top of your mini quilt with the batting and backing. Baste, then quilt as desired.

Square it up and bind.

I’m still in the process of doing the embroidery on mine. I’ll come back and add the mini quilt to this post once it’s complete.
