These Charm Square Soup Bowl Cozies really are such a great way to use up all those charm square packs you’ve been collecting!
Over the years while I was travelling from contract to contract with Dave, I managed to collect quite a few. My reasoning was that they were small so didn’t take up much room in the suitcase. And sometimes a girl just needs a fabric fix!
Of course, you don’t have to use charm squares to make the soup bowl cozies.
I’ve decided I need to get my scrap drawers in my fabric dresser under control and since we’re coming up on Christmas and I need to get going on making Christmas gifts, I’m working on the Christmas fabric drawers.
I had a few partly used holiday charm packs and the rest of the 5″ squares to make the 4 patches were cut from scraps leftover from years passed.
And not only are the soup bowl cozies awesome for using up fabric scraps… I also dug into my bin of quilt batting strips to make the 9½” squares of batting. If you’ve got a bunch of batting strips from trimming quilts before attaching the binding, pop over to my post on How to Join Leftover Quilt Batting Strips.
Edited to note: I don’t use my soup bowl cozies in the microwave. In fact, I rarely ever use a microwave.
But as I stated in my Charm Square Soup Bowl Cozy Tutorial… if you intend to use your soup bowl cozies in the microwave, make sure that when making the them you only use 100% cotton fabric, batting and thread.
If you do want to be able to use your soup bowls in the microwave, use a product like Pellon Wrap-N-Zap Cotton Quilt Batting
As you can see… I’ve been sewing up a storm making these Christmas Charm Square Soup Bowl Cozies!

Christmas Charm Square Soup Bowl Cozies Inspiration
This first set and the set below it were made from what was left of a couple of charm square packs.
Those two sets will make fun gifts to give to couples.
I’m going to add a couple of soup bowls and a jar of my Bean Soup in a Jar to go along with each set of Charm Square Soup Bowl Cozies I give this year.
The set of three soup bowl cozies pictured below will be perfect for a family of three with a young boy.
I love that snowmen fabric! It’s leftover from making this Christmas stocking.
And the second blue fabric in it is from making stockings for a Stocking Drive back in 2011. It really was time to get those scraps used up. 🙂
These next two soup bowl cozies aren’t made with Christmas fabric but somehow the charm square pack ended up in the Christmas fabric drawer and they will be just right to give to one of the men on my gift list.
These three I’ve decided to keep for us to use for every day over the holiday season. The red swirly fabric and the green fabric with red berries was leftover from making One Hour Table Runners.
I have no idea where the fabric with the white doves came from but it sure is pretty!
Do you have fabric in your stash that you don’t recall buying? Please tell me I’m not the only one. 🙂
This is a set of six that I’ll use when we have company during the holidays.
I only had enough of the white to make six four patches, so for the backing on these ones, I cut up fabric that was left over from making a tablecloth with matching table topper and napkins.
I don’t think company would object to being served a bowl of hearty homemade soup with one of these to hold the bowl.

And of course, I’d love it if you shared it on Twitter and Facebook. 🙂

November 29, 2020 6:00 pmI have thought of using them for micro-bowls but haven’t done it. Guess I’ll give it a try! Loved yours!

December 15, 2019 1:43 pmI have made them too and I always instruct “not” to use in microwave because I can’t be positive that I have always used only cotton everything..I have found that rounding the corners is good and easier..Mine hold a dish of ice cream too..protects from getting the hand too cold!!

I just popped over to your blog and noticed your Finishing Stitches Link Party. I’ll have to try to join in once the new year gets here. I’ve got several UFOs that really do need to be finished up!

November 30, 2017 9:35 pmThank you Carol! They’re fun to make and I use mine all the time now that the weather has gotten colder and I’m making more soups and stews.
I have a Laura Burch charm pack that I’ve had propped up on my desk because the colors just make me feel good… but I think those charm squares are destined to become more soup bowl cozies once I put the Christmas ones away after the holidays.
