In Our Garden BOM – Blocks 17 & 18

If you’ve been following along in the In Our Garden BOM 2016 that’s being hosted by Amy over at Sew Incredibly Crazy you know that each month a different designer shares two blocks; a traditionally pieced block and an applique block.

Vickie from More Stars in Comanche designed October’s blocks.

Her pieced block called Squash Blossom is such a beautiful block that I’m almost embarrassed to admit how much time I spent reverse sewing and then resewing seams!

First, I sewed one set of blocks together backwards. So that had to be unpicked, flipped and resewn. You can see the before shot over on Instagram @supermomnocape.

Then after I’d redone that center horizontal seam for the fifth time, I finally decided… good enough is good enough! 🙂

I think once all of the pieced blue and white blocks are all together in a finished quilt, I probably won’t see what to my eyes right now are so many little mismatched points. At least I hope so!

I had even more adventures with Vickie’s Squash Blossom Applique block.

For some reason my printer simply refused to print the pattern out at the proper size. Vickie’s and Amy’s versions of the blocks seemed to be double the size my printer was producing.

After several failed attempts to get my printer to cooperate, I decided to just go with it. If I couldn’t have one big squash, I’d make three little squash!

Once I had them fused to the fabric and cut out, three squash the exact same size looked kind of odd, so I made one smaller and the third smaller still.

After seeing that Pippin, one of the ladies in the In Our Garden Facebook group, had added a trellis to her block, I decided to borrow her idea.

Then of course, because three leaves and three squash just wouldn’t do, I added a couple more leaves.

The trellis, extra squash and leaves added up to a lot more hand stitching. I finished adding the final stitch very late one night this past week.

It’s a good thing I decided from the beginning that all the blue and white blocks are going into one quilt and the applique blocks into another. Those poor little squash look even littler when displayed beside the blue and white one!
