My New Writing Tote is Finished

I had hoped to have this writing tote finished before the middle of September as I wanted to be able to take it to the first fall meeting of the local Writers’ Society but after I hurt my arm, the pieces I had cut out and sewn together got set aside.

This week, I started working on it a little at a time.   There are still things my arm doesn’t like to do and if I sew for too long it starts to ache… but a half hour here, a half hour there and I managed to finish it yesterday morning.

It’s too late to qualify as my September ALYofF (A Lovely Year of Finishes) Goal but I think it might still be considered as a finish for 2015 Finish Along Q3 as the deadline for linking up Q3 finishes is Oct 6th.  If not… a finish is a finish and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

The oh so appropriate fabric is Typewriter from the Black and White Collection by Cotton + Steel.  I purchased a yard of it and a fat quarter of Study Hall (from the same line) with a gift certificate that I won from Mad About Patchwork back in April.

I used Study Hall for the sides of the tote.

It was also used for an inside pocket to hold pens.

Black pen for writing/taking notes, red for editing and the big one in the middle holds tiny post it notes to flag different sections of my manuscript that need more work or research.

The rest of the tote lining was made from a fabric line called Noteworthy by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics.  I chose it because one of the notes on the fabric says “Write a Book.”

I centered that quote on each of the front and back lining.  My first novel is written and in the editing stage.  But it won’t be my last so that quote will be an encouragement for all the books to come.

On the front lining, I added a large slip pocket for holding notepads or perhaps a composition book.

The small pouch holds my business cards.

A zippered pocket was inserted into the back lining to hold small objects that I don’t want accidentally falling out of the tote.

Now I just need to make a matching pencil case from the Study Hall fabric and figure out how to cover that old portfolio (pictured below) with more of the Typewriter fabric  and I’ll be ready for this month’s writers’ meeting.
