My June goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes is going to be the same as my May goal was… finish my Forest Friends quilt.
May came and went so quickly that it slipped by without me even working on the quilt.
But as of today, it’s one step closer to being done. This afternoon, I pieced the back of the quilt.
I’m actually quite pleased with how well I was able to match the print when I joined the pieces. I’ll show you how I went about doing that in another post.
For non-quilty works in progress, I thought I’d show you a little experiment I’m trying. Some of the other gardeners who have plots over at the community garden have mentioned that they put fencing around their plots to keep out critters that like to graze on the newly sprouted veggies. So I decided to start some things here at home in flats to be transplanted once we have a chance to get our 2 plots set up with temporary fencing.
I’ve always direct seeded swiss chard and beets. It will be interesting to see how they fair when we transplant them.
A couple of weeks ago, one of the vendors at the farmers’ market had a bunch of heirloom tomato plants for sale. This Broad Ripple Yellow Currant was only 6 inches tall when I brought it home.
It sure has grown since then! In a month or so it should be producing lots of mini tomatoes for salads and snacking on. It’s an indeterminate variety that will continue to grow and produce until killed by frost so we might even get enough for me to dehydrate some later in the season.
And now something just because they’re pretty. This morning when I went out to water the plants, it seems the peonies had blossomed over night.
They were badly in need of staking…
They smell heavenly!

June 9, 2015 11:17 pmI have the forest friends pattern and hope to get it started soon. Yours looks great and I hope you are able to complete it in June. I love peonies, and noticed that mine could use a little attention, they are beautiful but droop when they flower.

June 4, 2015 8:20 pmWonderful plants! The beets look okay to me. Maybe they just take longer? I love your tomato plant, and heirloom! You can grow more next year, if you really like the tomatoes.
