We all know how important it is to stay well hydrated especially during the summer heat.
But it’s not always easy to get in those 8 to 10 glasses of water each day, is it?
Some of you may not even like the taste of water.
And let’s face it, plain old water gets boring after the third or fourth glass.
So let’s kick boring to the curb with this refreshing summer drink recipe that is easy to make and have in the fridge to refill your glass throughout the day.
At the time I discovered this recipe several years ago, I had no idea that it and it’s many variations had become popular as a detox water. I just knew that on hot summer days when I was looking for something refreshing to drink, this filled the bill.
Refreshing Summer Drink Recipe
For the basic refreshing summer drink recipe you’ll start with:
- 1 medium (or two small) cucumbers, thinly sliced
- ½ of one large lemon or a whole medium lemon, thinly sliced
- a small handful of mint leaves
- 1 teaspoon of freshly grated or sliced ginger
- Enough filtered water to fill the pitcher
Thinly slice the cucumber and lemon.
If your mint leaves are large you’ll want to separate them from the stems. If they’re small like those pictured, you can leave them on.
Whether or not you grate or slice the ginger is really a personal preference. If you don’t like sipping on little bits of ginger, go ahead and slice it. The flavor will be imparted to the water either way.
Add the lemon, cucumber, mint and ginger to a large glass pitcher.
Fill the pitcher with filtered water and place in the fridge for several hours.
I like to make it the night before and let it sit in the fridge overnight as a delicious way to start the day. A glass first thing in the morning gives me a head start on getting in those 8 to 10 glasses of water.
The clean, fresh taste of these four simple ingredients combined in the water is so delicious that I find myself emptying the pitcher each day and enjoying every ounce.
There are countless ways that this could be modified to meet your tastes.
Frozen or fresh raspberries are a wonderful addition.
After a few hours in the fridge, the water turns a lovely shade of rose.
When you replace the raspberries with sliced strawberries the water turns a pretty peachy color.
You could substitute the lemon with limes.
Get creative and see what combinations you can come up with!

Might I suggest Iced Ceylon Cinnamon Orange Tea. Ceylon Cinnamon is naturally sweet without sugar. You can boil some Ceylon Cinnamon Sticks with diced orange peel or use Ceylon Cinnamon black tea. When iced it tastes particularly nice. The upside is that it improves alertness, memory and concentration plus helps cartilage development. A great drink for hikes or to take to the gym.
